needs and wants

Assalamualaikum

All praises to Allah.and peace be upon His messenger.

You know one of those days, when you just dont feel like doing anything. You dont feel like getting up from the comfy bed and just want to continue sleeping. Not in the mood to go to class, to the lectures, nor doing homeworks.

Well, I have had one of those days. I know I am not exactly the most diligent and hardworking medical students on my best days either, but there was this day few weeks ago when I woke up and I just felt terribly lazy.

I was rostered to be in the clinics for the whole day. but, I was thinking of skipping them. Not that I dont like the clinics, they can be quite interesting at times and I have learnt a lot from those sessions. But, as I said, there's just this feeling of extreme laziness that seems to come out of nowhere.

I managed to overcome that laziness (just barely) and got myself out of the bed, into the shower and then walked to the hospital (which is only 5 minutes away.Alhamdulillah for that). So there I was, finally in the clinics. And I was there for the whole day.

And it turns out that the clinics session that I had on the day was the best sessions I have yet throughout the rotation. It was pretty full on. There were so many patients and there's very few staff available. In the morning session, I was paired up with a nurse. and I ended up having to deal with patients by myself while the nurse dealt with other patients so that they wont have to wait for too long.

In short, I have learnt a lot of things that day. I finally understand CTG and the machine, I got to practice my interview and examination skills, a patient taught me about dermatomyositis, I got the cases for my reports, and I met a very pleasant lady from Kyrgyzstan.

All in all, it was a really great day and I got home that evening feeling content for what I have done.

Had I chose to skip the clinics, imagine how much would I miss.

I'd take this as a lesson which reminds me that things that I need are not necessarily the same as things that I want. (I 'wanted' to just stay in bed or do other fun stuff and skip clinics, but I actually 'need' that clinic sessions. There's a lot more stuff that I need to learn and heaps more things that I need to be good at)

Let us all pray that Allah would always guide us and gives us strength to pursue on our 'needs' rather than our 'wants'.

Cheers.
