common good.

assalamualaikum...peace to all...

it's that time again.the time for lecture on ethics.somehow i am kinda interested in listening to the lecture.as we are not just taught about medical ethics, but also the fundamental understanding of what ethic is.its like being in a philosophy lecture.as there will be at least one philosopher giving speech in the 2 hours lecture.

and when it comes to philosophy,it will be mostly being an atheist point of view(or at least i believe so).we discussed a lot about the principle of 'goodness' itself, the concept of death and dying, and etc. of which i dont feel like elaborating them here.most of the concepts are quite mind-boggling.but again, Islam seems has provide the answer for most of them.am really grateful for being a muslim.

but recently, we discussed about 'common good' and how to achieve it.this i found quite interesting when one of my colleague said that the reason she took medicine degree is to bring that common good to society. Then another colleague of mine speak up,telling that other profession actually are more effective in bringing that common good.take civil engineers for example.they can build sewage system which is clearly will bring good to society.and the politicians too, whom can amend laws and policies for the benefits of a nation.and etc.

in contrast, doctors will mostly attend to individual needs and thus only bringing the goodness for that particular individual.therefore, this is far away from achieving that 'common good' concept.

this statement brings silence to the lecture theatre.

i cant remember what was the lecturer response to this.but for me, i believe that the value of life itself must be paid great attention.one life saved could be comparable to thousands of 'common good' achieved.as life doesnt belong to human.its a gift that we must preserve to our capabilities.

so to all my dear friends who are on your way of becoming a doctor.keep reminding yourself on why you are doing this.be clear of what is your intention.may we all be a good one.both in people's eye, and God's.

Doctor for common good?
Doctor help the people who will do the common good to another, eg. doctor cure civil engineer from heart attack so that the engineer can work for the community... If the branches of a tree is the common good for society, doctors are the roots to allow the trees to grow~

*ne ayat dalam Manga Jepun, lupe da manga ape... haha
